In an early sign that President Simmons’s initiatives for academic renewal may be bearing fruit, applications to the graduate school rose 25 percent.... Grants to campus faculty topped $115 million during the last fiscal year, an increase of 13 percent over the previous year.... Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services Janina Montero accepted a position as vice chancellor at UCLA.... President Simmons told the faculty in February, “If we remain the size we are, we die.”... Three sculptures by Isamu Noguchi were installed on campus.... Ms. magazine named President Simmons one of its 2002 Women of the Year, while Texas Monthly honored her as a “Texas Woman” in February.… The medical school began a clerkship in biotechnology, which grants fourth-year medical students credit for working in one of four Boston-area biotechnology firms.
