Cathy Campo ’19.5 calls television her first babysitter. Shows like Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody kept her company while her single mother worked six days a week as a doctor. It was from this early age that Campo developed her interest in television and first imagined a future working in Hollywood.

Wanting to support others aspiring to a career in Hollywood, Campo started The Hollywood Assistant in September 2023 to promote equity and inclusion in the industry. Every month, the newsletter interviews current and former assistants and studio executives about their experiences, with emphasis on tips and advice. Campo says her subscribers have found networks, developed relationships, and received resume reviews and interviews since it started publishing in September 2023; she also cohosts a related podcast.

Tierra Sherlock ’24 is an incoming agent trainee at Creative Artists Agency and an avid reader of The Hollywood Assistant who became Campo’s mentee in her junior year through Brown Connect’s Summer Alumni Connections program. “Assistants are the backbone of the industry,” Sherlock says. “The newsletter is a cool way to round out my understanding of what it will be like to work in the role.”

Campo herself has been a creative at Netflix, a page in NBC’s page program, and an assistant working on late shows for Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert. In such a competitive space, Campo credits her success to industry mentors and Brown alumni who have supported her. “Information is gate-kept in Hollywood,” Campo says. “It was the alums who jumped on a call with me and initiatives like Women’s Launch Pad that gave me access to important resources.”

Alexa D’Ambrosio ’22, The Hollywood Assistant’s head of social media, met Campo while interning at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She says the newsletter is unique in being “both by and catered to Hollywood assistants, providing pragmatic, relevant, and actionable information.” She calls Campo “brilliant, generous with her time, and an extraordinary builder of community.”
