A Whale of an Honor

On March 2, the Brown library and Friends of the Library gave author Nathaniel Philbrick ’78 the Harris Collection Literary Award for his outstanding contributions to American Literature. Philbrick is best known for his 2000 best-seller and National Book Award winner, In the Heart of the Sea, the story of the the whale ship Essex, which sunk in the Pacific after a sperm whale attacked it in 1820. His next book, Sea of Glory, which focused on the attempt to map the Pacific Ocean, was a 2007 Pulitzer Prize finalist.
