William Rogers Award
Thomas G. Catena ’86
Considered the Brown Alumni Association’s highest honor, the William Rogers Award is given to an alumnus who exemplifies a man or woman leading a life of “usefulness and reputation.” Profiled in the March/April 2013 BAM , Catena is the founder, medical director, and only physician at Mother of Mercy Hospital in the war-torn Nuba Mountain region of the Sudan.

Sonja Brookins Santelises ’89
Profiled in the January/February 2013 BAM , Santelises, the chief academic officer of Baltimore’s public schools, is a crusader on behalf of urban children, especially those whose intelligence and abilities have been underestimated because of their skin color or economic status.
