In the article on the Soldiers Arch (“The Fallen,” Finally) in the November/December BAM, you mention that the names of 205 alumni who died in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam were added in 1997. You might also have noted that the University honors alumni who died during the Civil War, on both the Union and Confederate sides, with a marble plaque on the first floor of Manning Hall, assuming it is still there.

The marble tablet still hangs in the entry of Manning Hall, near a plaque commemorating members of the class of 1941 killed during World War II. According to the Encyclopedia Brunoniana, the Civil War tablet was dedicated the day before the 1866 Commencement to recognize the twenty-one Brown men who died in the conflict. Fourteen of the men died while fighting for the Union; seven died for the Confederacy. Only later were their names actually inscribed on the tablet. —Editor
