Novelist Edwidge Danticat '93 MFA greets fans after reading from her novel
The Dew Breakers
October 4. The book was this year's so-called First Reading, the summer
assignment for incoming first-years and transfer students. Many were
part of the diverse audience that packed De Ciccio Auditorium to hear
Danticat talk about her native country. "What does a book about an old
Haitian torturer have to do with you?" she asked. "Social media mean
you can all be torturers—from your own rooms. We can all become
torturers." In the audience was Wyclef Jean, the Grammy-winner and
erstwhile Haitian presidential candidate who had just been named a
visiting fellow at Brown.
