Honoring Veterans

January 7th, 2010

I was pleased to see Brown reinstitute the recognition of the thousands of alumni who have served and those who have died ("Freedom's Guardians," Elms, November/December). I hope this fine tradition is not forgotten down the road.

How nice that President Simmons graced Brown's Veterans Day ceremony with her presence. But in my opinion it would have been much nicer if she supported the reestablishment of ROTC at Brown. Then it would not be necessary to attract members of the Naval submarine school to Providence to have a military presence at the University's Veterans Day ceremony.

I commend Chaney Harrison '11 for persuading the Brown administration to honor the sacrifices of veterans, many of whom were introduced to military service in Naval ROTC at Brown.
