Expecting the endowment's return to stay low for the next several years, administrators announced plans to cut another $30 million from Brown's FY 2011 budget. They signaled that if the economy doesn't stabilize, further reductions may follow.... In June 148 scholars came to campus from fifty-two countries in the global south and emerging markets, including Brazil, Uzbekistan, Rwanda, Trinidad, and China. The inaugural Brown International Advanced Research Institutes sponsored four two-week sessions, during which young faculty members shared their thinking about issues in economic development, technology, global governance, and the humanities.... Brown and Draper Laboratory announced plans to create a center for energy research; it will develop alternative energy sources and ways to use existing energy more wisely.... Twenty-three seniors, five recent alumni, and two graduate students won Fulbright grants to study, teach, and do independent research outside the United States next year.
