Good For the Jews?

November 6th, 2008

Only recently did I read the letter from Max Gartenberg '48 criticizing my CD Taller Than Jesus ("Taller Than Jesus," Mail Room, May/June). Had Gartenberg bothered to listen to my album at jewmongous.com, I expect he would have come to the same conclusion as dozens of rabbis, cantors, and Jewish journalists: the Jewmongous repertoire revels in its Jewishness and skewers the stereotypes, thus deflating them, in the same way as All In The Family or Borat do. These songs are nothing if not proud, even self-aggrandizing. What's worse, Gartenberg's comparing the chipper pop songs of a proud Jew to the work of the Nazis both trivializes the Holocaust and does a disservice to himself and to our tribe.
