Reading the “finally” article on Howard Swearer in the November/December issue reminded me of his closing remarks at the June 1990 weeklong seminar at Brown on the collapse of the Soviet Union. When Swearer took questions following his speech., one gentleman asked, “Mr. Swearer, with the death of Communism in Russia and Socialism on the decline everywhere, what will happen to all the radicals, leftists, fellow travelers. Where will they go now?” Swearer never hesitated: “Don’t worry,” he said, “There will always be a place for them at Brown.”
