Two Losses; One Error

September 26th, 2007

I’m sure there were deadline pressures involved, but there is an error in your caption of Robert Papenhause sliding home against Wake Forest (Sports, July/August). Brown was eliminated by their second defeat of the regionals, but the first loss was Friday, June 1, to the host school, the University of Texas. In fact, Brown led briefly on Friday night, much to the dismay of the 9,000 orange-clad Longhorn fans in attendance. So, Brown did lose twice, but once each to Texas and Wake Forest, not twice to Wake Forest as stated.

A bit of a correction on your short take on the Brown baseball team’s performance in the NCAA Tournament. Brown did not lose to Wake Forest twice. My sons, Brady and Casey, and I were among a small but vocal Brown contingent who saw the Bears take on the high and mighty University of Texas Longhorns in the Friday night game at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas, home of the Houston Astros’ Triple A farm team, the Express. Brown was leading the five-time national champion Longhorns in the fifth inning! However, Texas’s superior athleticism and depth finally took command and the Longhorns prevailed in a mighty good game. The Wake Forest Demon Deacons eliminated the Bears on Saturday, as you reported. In a David vs. Goliath performance, the Bears represented the University very well. Wait ’til next year!
