The piece of wooden goalpost depicted in your November/December issue is not the only one that’s been preserved from Brown’s 38–14 victory over the Harvard Crimson at Cambridge in 1949 (“A Piece of the Post,” Finally). I, too, kept a similarly inscribed piece. I was among those hoisted to the crossbar, where I stayed until the crowd pulled down the posts.
My piece remained in an old trunk of Brown memorabilia until I retrieved it in May 2000 and brought it to my 50th reunion, where longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno ’50 was the Saturday forum speaker at Sayles Hall. It was presented to him there by someone running the program, and Joe promised to keep it in his office.
