Poet, essayist, and memoirist Elizabeth Alexander, the Wun Tsun Tam Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Columbia, delivered this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. lecture on February 2. Her talk, “Total Life Is What We Need: Self-Determination and Black Arts Collectives,” focused on the importance of black writers communities and works of poetry that advocate for social justice.
