Principled Hero

March 12th, 2015
Thank you for your well written review of Pay Any Price: Greed, Power, and Endless War by James Risen ’77  (“Keeping Secrets,” Arts & Culture, January/February). Mr. Risen graduated a year ahead of me, and I regret not having had the chance to shake the hand of someone who is so heroically principled. I believe this book underscores the key reasons why America has had “endless war.” If we would only listen and learn from Risen, rather than attempt to prosecute him, we might find a way out of these days filled with a labyrinth of hostility—much of which is blowback from the security state’s practice of torture and endless detention. Brown should “fly its flag high” to have had a part in the education of such a man.
