Homeless

Dillard University President Marvalene Hughes greets Joelle Nixon, the Dillard undergraduate who took refuge from Katrina at Brown last semester. Hughes visited Brown on December 3 during a daylong discussion of the hurricane's aftermath. Hughes said the historically black college was the hardest hit of New Orleans's universities; only one building escaped an eight-foot flood. Still, Hughes vowed that Dillard would reopen in January. Brown later announced it would give $1.1 million for scholarships at Dillard, as well as at Xavier University and Tougaloo College, to help students resume their studies. Hughes estimated it will cost "at least $500 million" to restore her campus.
