»  WOMEN’S SOCCER Despite a solid defense, the women struggled offensively, posting multigoal games in only six of seventeen games and finishing 1–4–2 in the Ivies and 5–10–2 overall. The lone Ivy victory was a memorable one, though, as Brown defeated Princeton, 2–1, on October 8 for the first time in eight years.

Tricaptain Hilary Wilson ’06 had another outstanding season, recording 127 saves, an average of 7.47 a game. She also posted four shutouts and was second in the league in save percentage at .858. She was named Second Team All-Ivy.

» VOLLEYBALLAlthough the team did not win the Ivy title, it did spoil Yale’s shot at one, upsetting the Bulldogs in the final game of the season to knock them out of first place. Brown finished 12–13 overall and third in the league at 9–5, the Bears’ best record since 2001.

All-Ivy pick and tricaptain Leigh Martin ’06 led the Ivies in assists with 1,106 and finished her career with a school-record 4,360. She also holds the school mark for average assists in a game at 12.29. Tricaptain Lauren Gibbs’06 finished fourth all-time at Brown in kills with 1,090. Like Martin, Gibbs made second-team All-Ivy, while Julie Mandolini-Trummel ’08, who averaged 3.07 kills a game and had a team-high twenty-nine solo blocks, was a first-team pick.

» FIELD HOCKEY The Bears finished at 5–2, their best Ivy season since 1999 and good enough for second while finishing even overall at 8–8. The Bears were shut out in three consecutive September games but then rallied by defeating Harvard, 1–0, in what was arguably the team’s most important victory of the season.

Leading the way were tricaptain Kristen Vincent ’06 and Samantha Lloyd ’07, who were named First Team All-Ivy and Second Team Dartfish/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Northeast Regional.

» MEN’S WATER POLO The men finished 20–11 and were ranked twentieth nationally. The season began with seven wins in eight games, including upsets over Air Force and the University of Redlands, the first victories over ranked opponents since 2003. The Bears advanced to the finals of the Northern Championships for the first time since 1994.

Cocaptain Jay Fantone ’06 and rookie Mike Gartner ’09 were both named First Team All-Northern Division. Gartner was the only rookie named to the First Team All-Eastern Tournament.

» MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Captain Owen Washburn ’06 fell a mere two seconds short of taking the individual title at the Heptagonal Championships at New York City’s Van Cortlandt Park in late October, in a finish that earned him First Team All-Ivy status.Chris Burke ’07 was the other Brown harrier to crack the top ten, finishing in eighth place and earning Second Team All-Ivy honors.

Overall, the team took third at the Heps, behind Dartmouth and Princeton, and then followed up by finishing fifth out of thirty-seven teams at the NCAA Regionals. Washburn had an off day, finishing sixth for Brown, but Burke finished seventeenth overall and first for the Bears, a performance that earned him All-Region recognition.

» WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY The women moved up two spots from last year to take fifth at the Heps at Van Cortlandt Park. Captain Anna Willard ’06 moved up forty-two spots and knocked a minute and seconds off her time at last year’s race, finishing first for the Bears and twelfth overall. The team then finished eighth out of thirty-eight teams at the NCAA Regionals, aided by career performances from Anya Davidson ’06 and Jilane Rodgers ’06. Davidson earned All-Regional honors.
