Before ice hockey there was ice polo. This 1895 photo of Brown's ice polo team shows the shorter but heavier sticks used in the sport. A game found almost entirely in New England, ice polo was also played with a small rubber-covered ball instead of a puck. The great educational philosopher Alexander Meiklejohn, class of 1893, was a member of the ice polo team at Brown.
