The New England Patriots signed Brown’s all-time leading rusher, Mike Malan ’02, and sent him to play in NFL Europe this spring before joining training camp later this year.… After a 3–9 start, the men’s basketball team caught fire just in time for Ivy competition, heading into mid-February 7–1 in league play and beating Princeton at Princeton for the first time ever.… The women’s basketball team put together a seven-game winning streak of its own before splitting the next four Ivy games and falling to second place in the league with six games left in the regular season.… USA Hockey named women’s hockey team goaltender Pam Dreyer ’03 and forward Kim Insalaco ’03 to the national team that will compete in the April 2003 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championships in Beijing, China; also earning a roster spot was Brown’s all-time leading scorer, forward Katie King ’97.… Led by Jayne Finst ’04, the gymnastics team posted a 7–5 record by mid-February, with six regular-season matches remaining; the squad broke a school record by scoring 192.0 points at a tri-meet on February 8.
