All In the Family

March 10th, 2009

I have very much enjoyed the success of Brown football in recent years and give Coach Estes a lot of credit for this. However, I must take some issue with Gordon Morton's recent article, "The Estes Way" (January/February). He writes, "In fact its Ivy peers did not take the Brown football program seriously until Mark Whipple '79 arrived in 1994." Coach Whipple did have a much more impressive record than his predecessors, but I believe Coach Estes put it best when he said, "I think it all starts with recruiting." Coach Whipple's success on the field owes a debt of gratitude to the success of his predecessor, Mickey Kwiatkowski, on the recruiting trail. Of course, I could be a bit biased.
