Men’s and women’s cross-country dominated the New England Championships in October, when Patrick Tarpy ’05 became the first U.S. man to win the race since 1989; his 23:57 time was the first ever below twenty-four minutes by a Brown athlete in the 8,000-meter event. The varsity team finished second behind Providence College, while the men’s junior varsity took first after its runners finished one through four. The women’s team won the varsity and junior varsity competitions for the first time ever; its runners were four of the top five finishers.… Jamie Cerretani ’04 won the singles title and teamed with Adil Shamasdin ’05 to capture the doubles competition at the 2003 Omni Hotels ITA Northeast Regionals in October, giving both players automatic bids to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Michigan in November.… Hannah Swett ’91 and Melissa Purdy ’91 made up two-thirds of the Yngling class crew that won the silver medal at the 2003 Athens Regatta in September, a last tune-up before next year’s Athens Olympics.… Emily Taylor ’04 raced in a three-woman sailing crew at the Women’s National Championships in North Carolina in late October, finishing fourth.
